Afloat on Ha Long Bay

Nature at its most magnificent, perfect harmony between sky and earth, mountains and water, makes Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh province, 165 kilometers east of Hanoi, an essential stop for any visitor to Vietnam.

Ships dot the Bay like floating castles.  To spend a night on such a ship during holidays, tourists must book several months in advance.

Ships typically leave the Bai Chay moorage depart at noon.  The fare of about $110 per person on a four star vessel includes three meals featuring local seafood, sightseeing fees and kayaking.

From a boat, Ha Long Bay is beautiful like a water-colour painting.

Many will visit the Sung Sot (Amazing) Cavern in the afternoon. Sung Sot Cavern is the largest of the many caves on Ha Long Bay.

A Ha Long Sunset. Tourists can take a kayak to the beach at Titop Island or explore the many islets.

On four-star boats, visitors will enjoy sea specialities while enjoying the landscape.

Emotion, a boat recently put into service, looks splendid at night.

RAGING GRACE

Ubon Ratchathani is the shortest land link to southern Laos whose pristine waterfalls and beguiling nature would snare many a heart
Most waterfalls lack flourish in summer but not the Khone Phapheng in Champasak Province of southern Laos which, thanks to the mighty Mekong River, rages almost unabated all year round, venting its fury against huge boulders standing in its path.
Stretching the breadth of the Mekong, the Khone Phapheng is strewn with rocks of all size, and the roar of the waves crashing against them is so loud it can be heard from miles away.
''Summer is the time when the waterfall is at its peak beauty because the water is clear,'' said Dalath Khampaseuth, my local tour guide when I visited the fall recently, before adding, ''the water turns brick-red during rainy season when no one can swim nor ride a boat across the Khone Phapheng because the cascades are too strong, the layout rocky and unnavigable, and any such attempt can result in death.''....Read more

Ninh Binh Has All - Life, Culture, Nature

Approximately two and a half hours south of Hanoi lies the city of Ninh Binh, a fairly grim industrial looking town that would never deserve a mention if it was not for the fact it is located next to a very special piece of countryside.

Cat Ba is an island of approximately 140 sq.km in Halong Bay, Northern Vietnam .Cat Ba is the largest island in the Bay and approximately half of its area is covered by a National Park, which is home to the highly endangered Cat Ba langur. This golden-headed langur is rarely seen, as fewer than 100 specimens are thought to survive in the wild, although it is the subject of a well-organised conservation programme. The Park covers both land and marine areas and has a high biodiversity, although it is at risk from too rapid an increase in tourism. CON DAO ISLAND - SLEEPING BEAUTY

The Con Dao Islands (also known as Poulo Condore) are an archipelago of 15 islands situated in the South China Sea, around 250 kilometers, or a 45-minute flight, from Ho Chi Minh City.
The island is famed for its grizzly past: due its remoteness, the French used the main island of Con Son (the largest island in the group) to keep anti-colonial protesters prisoner. The South Vietnamese continued the tradition, sending political dissenters and activists to the 11 prisons which were also used in the American War. One third of the current 6,000 population are Vietnamese soldiers based in barracks dotted around the island....Read more

HANOI A CITY TO BE SAVOURED

Hanoi, one of the most beautiful of the colonial Indochinese cities, is often the start or end point of a trip to Vietnam, and what a great welcome or farewell it is. Oozing with charm, Hanoi has gone through wholesale changes since Vietnam swung open its doors to tourism, but it remains true to its essential personality and is an amazing city to experience.
Though considerably quieter than big sister Saigon, Hanoi still retains a vibrant atmosphere. From the early hours until late at night, the fig-tree shaded streets swarm with careening motorbikes, often with four, five or even six people aboard. A cyclo is available on most street corners, but unless you are making a particularly long trip, the best way to explore Hanoi is by foot....Read more

MY SON CHAM RUIN (QUANG NAM)

Mankind builds marvelous and imagination-defying cities and structures, then erases them again as the centuries, along with the fickle loyalty of scholars, priests, kings, and common people render them either obsolete or irrelevant. The ruins of My Son in Vietnam, not far from Da Nang and Hoi An, fall into this category.
My Son was once an impressive place, a holy valley of impressive Hindu temples and burial grounds of the royalty of the Champa people. My Son was the Vietnamese equivalent of places like Cambodia's Angkor Wat and Egypt's Valley of the Kings. In its heyday, My Son included over seventy temples, along with a number of monuments with inscriptions in both Sanskrit, the holy language of ancient India, and Cham. In 1999, UNESCO named My Son a World Heritage Site...Read more

CHRISTMAS IN VIETNAM

Christmas is one of the four most important festivals of the Vietnamese year, including the birthday of Buddha, the New Year and the Mid-autumn Festival. Although the Christians observed the religious rituals of Christmas.
Traditional Vietnamese religions are Buddhism and the Chinese philosophies of Taoism and Confucianism. However, during French rule, many people became Christians, that occupy 8 to 10 percent of whose population. This is because the Vietnamese are a fun-loving, sociable people and the various Vietnam festivals and events are actually occasions for them to a gala time, all together. Christmas in Vietnam is a grand party.
History Of Christmas In Vietnam
Christmas in Vietnam has had a tumultuous history. The Catholics are a minority in Vietnam but they used to celebrate Christmas in Vietnam quite in peace right from the days of the French rule. That is until the Communists took over political power in 1975. The church-state relations soured during that time and the Catholics were relegated to celebrating Jesus’s birthday in privacy.
Since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, church-state relations have not always been smooth. However, they have been improving since the introduction of economic reforms in the late 1980s. Liberalist policies adopted since the 1980s saw Vietnam warming up to western influences and ideals and Christmas in Vietnam came back triumphantly. Now Christmas is one of the major festivals in Vietnam, celebrated with much fanfare by all religious communities.
Phat Diem Cathedral in Ninh Binh Province is considered the spiritual home for the seven million Catholics who live in Vietnam, a predominantly Buddhist nation. Hundreds of Catholics gather for Christmas Eve Mass in the northern city of Phat Diem. Children staged a nativity play to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ - or Kito, as he is known in Vietnamese -- in front of the city's cathedral, built in 1891.
Christmas In Vietnam
Christmas in Vietnam is a huge event, especially in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and the Vietnamese Christmas celebrations here are like any other city in the western world. The Christians in Vietnam attend a Midnight mass on Christmas Eve and return home to a sumptuous Christmas dinner. The Christmas dinner usually consists of chicken soup while wealthier people eat turkey and Christmas pudding.
On Christmas Eve, Vietnamese people in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, especially young people, like to go into the city centre, where there is a Catholic Cathedral. The streets are crowded with people on Christmas Eve and in the city centre cars are not allowed for the night... Read more

CUSTOM TAILORING IN HOI AN

Hoi An is a town of tailors. Their shops, lining every street, are filled with little women in flowing ao dai (the traditional dress over pantaloons that, aptly quipped, “covers everything, but hides nothing”), all ready to bat their lashes and convince you to order more than you intended. Every day, in shops all over town, the ao dai change colors: Sunday is pink, Monday white, Tuesday gray… Our tailor just shrugged when we asked the origin of the local tradition.

The choices for clothing here are overwhelming. There may well be a hundred or more tailors in and around town and every shop proudly displays the same styles in the same colors out front, none seeming to aspire higher than mid-tier catalog garb. How they all chose to make that particular apple green jacket with the hood and offset closure I do not know. A few of the popular “rack” styles are cute and very on trend. Others look like prom or bad bridesmaid dresses that would be more at home under fluorescent lights in a soulless department store basement. Looking only at the sidewalk showings, I wouldn’t have ordered a thing. Only the relative success stories of friends at home carried me inside.

There are three stores that advertise on billboards in the Danang airport and along the road leading into town: Yaly, Thu Thuy, and A-Dong Silk. The first two were most often recommended in our pre-trip research. A very stylish friend had told us about the shop Queen Margaret of Spain visited in 2002—if it’s good enough for an actual queen!—so we went first to Thu Thuy.

I had brought two items with me to guide the tailors: a favorite wrap shirt ruined in dry cleaning and my most flattering but now too big slacks. Thu Thuy had a fairly broad selection of fabrics and colors, with and without stretch, in patterns and solids. No perfect matches, but good choices. We had been warned that impostor fabrics are common and to ignore the labels on the fronts of the swatch books. The names stitched into the bolt edging seem to me more likely to be the real deal, but who knows....read more

VIENTIAN – THEY CALL IT MELLOW, YELLOW

Throughout Southeast Asia, we have been struck by how much yellow we see. Flags, shirts, signs, etc. are very frequently yellow in color, or have yellow as a dominant theme. In Thailand, apparently people started wearing yellow shirts on regular occasions in honor of the king’s birthday, or the anniversary of his succession to the throne. That’s just one example. Elsewhere, yellow is symbolic of Buddhism, so it obviously gets a lot of attention. Vientiane, the capital of Laos, may qualify as the all time most mellow capital city in the world, which when coupled with the prevalent theme of yellow, had me humming the mellow yellow song throughout our 24 hour stay.
